It was common in the court of Genghis Khan that detractors, captured foreign generals, and enemies of the state be tortured while on display for all the court to see. A beaten, bearded, flea-bitten man was tied up like a long package and lain on his side on a wooden table. A number of Khanâs soldiers held the prisoner down tight as a smoking crucible was tipped and then molten lead was poured into the prisonerâs ear. The prisoner put up quite a fight, but it didnât take him long to settle down, shivering, as the molten metal poached his brain from the inside out.
Mounted next to him, however, were two wooden posts about four feet apart and six high. Forming a human web, so to speak, between the posts was a naked woman, hung upside-down, her ankles and wrists tied to the posts such that her body formed an X-shape. Her physique tensed and flexed as she bellowed, but alas, the sound of her screams could not be heard. There was only a death-like silence. Two soldiers approached, each holding an L-shaped spoon-like instrument, both of which were inserted into the womanâs vagina; then each man pulled his tool, and this sufficed to open the womanâs vagina as far as it could go. Next, another crucible was brought forward by a grim-faced Mongolian metallurgist, only this one was filled with molten silver, which had a much higher melting point, and with a consummate skill, he slowly emptied the crucibleâs contents into the womanâs opened sex organ. The look on her face and the tremors of her body defied description, and all the onlookersâincluding the jewel- and leather-clad man who was Khan himselfâwatched with smiling satisfaction.
The Comanche Indians were equestrian nomads who believed that the only way to properly defend themselves was to kill all human beings who werenât Comanches, not just the English settlers and the Spanish and the French but even other Native American tribes who got anywhere near them, and their expertise at torture was well-honed on white men and Native Americans alike. Would-be settlers would travel across the southern plains only to be greeted by tracts of land upon which men had been stripped and staked to the ground. Their lips, ears, noses, and eyelids were cut off, along with their genitals, those wounds immediately cauterized by torches so the prisoner wouldnât bleed to death, and if that werenât bad enough, the victim was then forced to eat his own raw testicles. This, in other words, was the Comanche calling card: Come onto our land and this will happen to you.
Children and women of other tribes were taken as slaves to be worked to death. But children of the white men, and even babies, were fastidiously scalped, for the younger the scalp, the more potent the magic. Infant penises, too, were taken, and added to necklaces for good luck. One Comanche elder, captured by US troops in 1875, possessed a necklace with over one hundred baby penises threaded to it.
